One reason why the band tool attracted such a wide variety of listeners is because their music was mostly about self discovery and the mystery in the development. Their delivery was cloaked in metaphors, and in the world of poetry that leaves infinite room for the subjectee to run with his imagination on the meaning...
So here is the lyric I am going to expand, and to this day it is the only meaning I've ever thought that fits in perfectly with part of my life experience, and at the same time reveals a deeper meaning on the nature of man and life.

The snake behind me hissesFull Lyrics: http://www.lyricsmania.com/lyrics/tool_lyrics_1951/aenima_lyrics_4858/h_lyrics_57921.html
What my damage could have been.
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again.

The snake is the thinking mind, that crunches numbers, runs scenarios, etc.. The blood is the momentum of action. When man tries to do something, he sets his will into motion, when doubt comes into play, it restricts the motion. This restriction is the death to momentum naturally, but it is all-the-same still natural.
Life teaches us about all it's inner elements, and teaches us their names. And I don't mean their word names, I mean the way of their nature and how they co-relate to other inner elements.
The dissonance caused by the conflict illustrated in the lyrics, is part of the 'calibration' process. And as man becomes intimate with himself, and how the life is inside of him, he better understands and becomes familiar with his inner elements so he can employ them in a way that makes sense.
There are other 'tools' that can micro-manage processes such as decision, action, and doubt; like wisdom. I like to call wisdom an greater-angel, because it is a master of many other spiritual processes, and all the process employed by wisdom will have their own personal nature of wisdom within themselves so they can fulfill their roles properly.
When I mention angel-like spirits, I mean spirits that are fixed-and-yet-flexible in nature, like the growth of human hair or fingernails, or even more power-full, like the process of joy rising, or the call of hunger. These 'workers', just mentioned, are given to and serve man pretty unconditionally. There are many other angel-like spirits that, to my current understand, are obviously outside of man-- like the process of water freezing into ice, or pine tree seed growing into a pine-tree.
I know we typically call this biology and geology type phenomenon "science", and it is, but still there is musical order to make the phenomenon come about. Science becomes the study of the micro and macro processes, and while it has it's popper place, the explanation is not the actualization.
That's enough for now. Hope you enjoyed Tool Fans!
